It now goes to the Governor for his signature. This bill requires reasonable accommodations for pregnant women at work. The passage of the law in the Senate comes the day after the Supreme Court decision in Young v UPS. The court decided in favor of the pregnant worker by 6-3. UPS was not willing to accommodate Young’s lighter duty needs during her pregnancy. Read more here. Ultimately, this week brought good news to pregnant women in North Dakota and nationally. Earlier this week, we shared an action alert regarding 1294. This bill prohibits employers from retaliating against workers who discuss their wages. The transparency is a key component in exposing pay inequities and rectifying it. We are seeing great success with that action. The committee is reconsidering their recommendation. We hope to see 1294 get a do pass recommendation and propel to victory in the Senate. We’ll keep you posted. SB 2279, the anti-discrimination bill adding sexual orientation and gender identity to our human rights laws, had a comprehensive hearing on Monday. There was 5 hours of supportive testimony and 1 hour of opposition testimony. The committee still needs to discuss and act on the bill. We anticipate it getting to the House floor next week. Please reach out to your house representative to respectfully urge a yes vote. The prime human trafficking legislation, SB 2107, received committee action and approval with a unanimous do pass recommendation. The Gag Amendment within the bill did get an amendment that encourages family planning referrals, but the gag is still in place. It is a slight improvement over what was on the bill. An amendment NDWN supported to further clarify the amendment was defeated in committee by 1 vote. The bill will go to the house floor and very likely pass. Our actions on the amendment moved the conversation forward and did improve it slightly. We may be able to get further improvements if the bill goes to conference committee.
